Summary

"The Awakening" by Leo Tolstoy is a late 19th-century novel that follows Katherine Maslova, a young woman imprisoned after life's misfortunes. The story studies morality, redemption, and human struggles through Maslova's experiences and the thoughts of Prince Dmitri Nekhludoff, who must face the impact of his earlier actions. At the beginning, Maslova is being escorted to court as a prisoner during a spring morning that clashes with her harsh life in jail. The story shows society's lack of caring for suffering people. As it develops, Maslova’s past is revealed, including her tough childhood, love, and path to a life of wrongdoing that results in her arrest. This sets the stage for a deep look at personal awakening and the search for redemption as past relationships and decisions meet in the courtroom.
