Summary

"Adrift in the City; or, Oliver Conrad's Plucky Fight" by Horatio Alger Jr., tells the story of a boy named Oliver Conrad as he grows up and deals with tough issues. The story revolves around Oliver's difficult situation with with his bully step-brother, Roland Kenyon and his mean step-father, Mr. Kenyon. Oliver has to be tough and try to make it on his own while living with his step-family. The book starts with Oliver and Roland fighting, showing how they don't get along because one thinks he’s better than other. Roland orders Oliver around, but Oliver stands up for himself, leading to a fight. Even though Oliver was just defending himself, Mr. Kenyon accuses him of being the bad guy. This shows how Oliver will have to fight for himself and find his own way, even with his step-father working against him.

About the Author

Horatio Alger Jr. was an American author who wrote young adult novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to middle-class security and comfort through good works. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on the United States from 1868 through to his death in 1899.
