Summary

"The Telegraph Boy" by Horatio Alger Jr. follows Frank Kavanagh's adventure to New York City with twenty-five cents, where he quickly learns about life on the streets. Frank is swindled and left with no money. He finds friendship with another boy named Dick Rafferty. Frank's luck changes when starts assisting a blind man, which starts him on the path of become a telegraph messenger, and highlights his grit to prosper.

Horatio Alger Jr. was an American author who wrote young adult novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to middle-class security and comfort through good works. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on the United States from 1868 through to his death in 1899.
