Summary

"The Man Among the Monkeys; or, Ninety Days in Apeland" by Léon Gozlan is a fictional adventure where Polydorus Marasquin, a natural history enthusiast, finds himself shipwrecked on an island overrun by apes. Driven by survival after his life is upturned by animal related tragedies, his narrative explores the complex relationship between humans and animals, using a darkly humorous tone to lighten Polydorus's misfortunes. The story follows Polydorus who inherits the family exotic animal business after his father’s death. Later, a vengeful baboon causes devastation, leading Polydorus to sail for Oceania, only to then be shipwrecked on the jungle island. Throughout his stay, themes of adaption and understanding between species are explored throughout his encounters with the island's inhabitants.
