Summary

"The Forfeiture" by Charles Rivière Dufresny is a funny play from the 1700s that shows how silly society could be about love, family duties, and getting married. The story is about a young couple, Valere and Isabelle, who are in love, but Isabelle's aunts, Belise and Araminte, are against it. These aunts said they'd never marry, which messes up Valere's chance to get money from them if he marries Isabelle. To fix this, Valere's smart helper, Frontin, makes a plan where he pretends to be different guys to trick the aunts into liking him so they'll give up their money and let Valere marry Isabelle. The play has lots of mix-ups and lies, but in the end, everything works out as the aunts realize they were being hypocritical about love, and Valere and Isabelle can finally be together.
