Summary

"No Great Magic" by Fritz Leiber is a science fiction novel that follows a theater group whose performances blur the lines between the real world and the stories they tell, especially when dealing with historical and supernatural characters. The story focuses on Greta, a woman struggling with memory loss and a fear of open spaces, who becomes deeply involved with the complex relationships within the theater company. Starting in a busy dressing room as the actors get ready for a production of "Macbeth," the novel shows Greta's interactions with Sid, another actor, whose original ideas for the play clash with how it's usually done, and Iris Nefer. As pressures build and the play takes unexpected turns with a character embodying Queen Elizabeth, Greta thinks about her own fears and the strangeness of her life, mixing theater with deeper questions about who we are, what we create, and how much the past affects us.
