Summary

"The Cost of Shelter" by Ellen H. Richards is a study from the early 1900s about how homes affect families, society, and the economy, especially for those with average incomes. The book looks at how housing has changed and how important a home is for feeling good and staying healthy, while also criticizing the high costs of owning a home. Richards starts by explaining how 'home' makes people feel safe and connected, then looks at how living situations have changed and worries about the stress of modern city life. The book talks about the vital role of homes in family life, including what society expects, the pressure of money, and how living conditions affect people's minds and emotions and advises against showing off wealth through living spaces, encouraging people to rethink what a true home really means.
