Summary

"The Song of the Stone Wall" by Helen Keller is a collection of poems that uses stone walls as a symbol to investigate nature, history, and what it means to be human. Through vivid descriptions and thoughtful language, the poems aim to show how important hard work, never giving up, and our personal feelings are when it comes to our world and what we inherit from the past. Keller asks readers to imagine walking beside a stone wall, seeing it as a place to understand the strength, fears, and ambitions of the people who came before us. The poems connect the actual stones with bigger ideas about life, death, and starting over, showing the walls as quiet observers of the tough parts of human history and the American spirit. In the end, it celebrates being strong, having faith, and seeing the loveliness of nature and human efforts.

About the Author

Helen Adams Keller was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, she lost her sight and her hearing after a bout of illness when she was 19 months old. She then communicated primarily using home signs until the age of seven, when she met her first teacher and life-long companion Anne Sullivan. Sullivan taught Keller language, including reading and writing. After an education at both specialist and mainstream schools, Keller attended Radcliffe College of Harvard University and became the first deafblind person in the United States to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
