"Now We Are Three" by Joe L. Hensley is a science fiction story set in the mid-20th century, addressing strong emotional ideas about guilt, duty, and what happens when science goes too far, especially with nuclear weapons and the harm they cause. The story follows John Rush, a former scientist haunted by his past who now lives in the countryside with his sick wife, Mary, and their twin children, who have many disabilities. John is trying to deal with losing his wife and the possibility of losing his children in a legal battle, and he feels guilty because his work in science has led to hurt and suffering. The twins have a strange connection with their mother and can communicate in ways he doesn't understand, setting up a heartbreaking choice for John: should he join his family in a world beyond understanding, or stay in a world of sadness and regret? He decides to stay, facing the pain around him instead of running away.
