Summary

"Historical Sketches of Old Charing" by James Galloway is a journey through the history of Charing Cross. Galloway starts with the Hospital and Chapel of St. Mary Roncevall, created during Henry III's rule, linking England to a Spanish monastery and exploring its centuries-long effects. Providing background on the Hospital and Chapel's founding Galloway looks at its role as a religious and medical center and discusses Queen Eleanor of Castile's influence. He also looks at the monastery's importance for travel and hospitality in medieval times. This leads to an investigation of the convent, its additions to the community, its historical importance and how it changed over time.
