Summary

"The Sign of the Red Cross: A Tale of Old London" by Evelyn Everett-Green is a story that journeys into London in the late 1800s, during a time of terrible plague, and shows the different ways people lived and behaved back then. At the center of the story is Charles Mason, a rich builder who thinks very highly of himself, and the Harmer family, who are good and honest people. As the plague spreads, we see trust, community, and strength of character develop. It begins with a disagreement between Mason and Rachel Harmer, where he doesn't believe the rumors of the plague. The characters, like the caring nurse Dinah Morse and the troublemaking Frederick Mason, react differently to the situation, while the sight of an unusual comment in the sky grows fear. This creates a sense of things about to go wrong, as the characters learn about morality, money, and how to deal with a looming disaster.
