Summary

"The Apartment Next Door" by William Johnston is a story set just after World War I, where a young woman named Jane Strong gets caught up in a world of mystery. Jane's quiet life changes when she sees a strange meeting outside her apartment one night, leading to the discovery of a dead body, possibly from a crime. Her curiosity pulls her into a network of German spies, and she struggles to figure out her place in these dangerous events. As she learns about a possible suicide related to the man she saw, a stranger asks her to meet Mr. Fleck for a secret mission that would help her country. Things get even more complicated with her neighbors, the Hoffs, who might be part of the spy ring trying to harm the United States. Jane finds herself deeply involved in national security, trying to manage her normal life while playing a crucial role in uncovering a wartime plot.
