Summary

"Nicky-Nan, Reservist" by Arthur Quiller-Couch is a tale set in the Cornish town of Polpier during the early 1900s. It follows Nicholas Nanjivell, or Nicky-Nan, as he deals with the approaching Great War, exploring responsibility and community in a time of struggle. When war breaks out this man with a leg injury feels conflicted as his town joins the fight. The story begins in Polpier, revealing Nicky-Nan's shift from an outgoing man to someone troubled by injury and money issues. The declaration of war brings anxiety to the adults and war games to the children, tension rises when Nicky-Nan is called to duty, despite struggles with his health and money, his internal conflict sets the scene for a story in times of crisis.

About the Author

Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch was a British writer who published using the pseudonym Q. Although a prolific novelist, he is remembered mainly for the monumental publication The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250–1900 and for his literary criticism. He influenced many who never met him, including American writer Helene Hanff, author of 84, Charing Cross Road and its sequel, Q's Legacy. His The Oxford Book of English Verse was a favourite of John Mortimer's fictional character Horace Rumpole.
