Summary

"Corporal Sam and Other Stories" by Arthur Quiller-Couch is a compilation of short narratives set in the past, largely focused on military conflicts, that examines duty, selflessness, and the range of human feelings. The initial tale, "Corporal Sam," centers on a young soldier named Corporal Sam Vicary during the San Sebastian war, who is coming to terms with the brutal truths of war. Sergeant David Wilkes and Corporal Vicary are introduced as they come down from Mount Olia, thoughtful about what just took place there. As the story sets the stage for an attack, it demonstrates comradeship as the characters share their concerns for family members and others. The mindful corporal shows compassion for innocent people, setting up the story to examine the significance and morality of war. The author blends detail, conversation, and historical setting to pull readers into the heart of the soldier's life and the price of war.
