Summary

"Great Mysteries and Little Plagues" by John Neal, is a thoughtful collection of essays and stories from the late 1800s that considers the charming yet confusing world of children and their impact on the world around them. Opening with a declaration against traditional introductions, Neal starts out on a journey to uncover the secrets hidden within young hearts, asking the simple yet huge question: “What are children?” With stories and sharp observations, Neal shines a light on not just what children do, but the profound life lessons that come from their innocent minds. The book suggests that these young people hold deep truths about life, morality, and how society works. Through vivid stories and careful thinking, Neal invites reading into a world where childhood is both a wonderful mystery to explore and a plague of mischief.
