Summary

"Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery — Volume 1" by Filson Young is a historical story that looks at the life and trips of Christopher Columbus, also looking at the time period he lived in and the effects his discoveries had on the New World. The book starts by setting the scene for Columbus's journey in the late 1400s. It opens with a deep thinking letter from the author to Sir Horace Plunkett, talking about what drives people to explore and discover. The book stresses the difference between older stories and a chance to truly learn who Columbus was and why he did what he did. Young suggests that Columbus's determination and strong desire to explore came from a deep love for the sea, which shaped him into the famous explorer that he became, taking a look at his early life in Genoa and the experiences that shaped him.
