Summary

"The Mischievous Typesetter" by Noel M. Loomis is a science fiction story that tells the tale of High-Pockets Jones, a man tasked with operating a linotype machine with a mind of its own. High-Pockets, sentenced to wrangle the unruly No. 7, a machine notorious for causing trouble at the Daily News, soon realizes this is no ordinary piece of equipment. The machine acts independently and reacts to High-Pockets' feelings and thoughts. As High-Pockets deals with No. 7's antics and his drunken distractions, the story humorously explores the line between man and machine, diving into themes of control and technology's surprising potential; their confrontation brings out the unexpected personality within the machine.
