Summary

"The Gates Between" by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps is a captivating story set in the late 1800s that focuses on Dr. Esmerald Thorne who shares a remarkable event that touches on love, death, and things beyond our world. The story follows the doctor as he deals with work problems and how he gets along with different people, and it looks at very strong feelings while he makes choices, paying close attention to his time with a special woman named Helen. In the story, we learn about Dr. Thorne and realize he has something important to tell us. One night in November, Dr. Thorne gets hurt while he is walking outside in nature. During his recovery, he meets Helen, a kind and strong woman. They quickly grow fond of each other. Their relationship shows how different Dr. Thorne's job is from the feelings he has for Helen. Dr. Thorne thinks about his past and how strange his job is. As the story goes on, we see him falling more and more for Helen, even though he normally follows logic and reason. It perfectly sets the stage for the story and how the story will be about love, thinking about what it means to exist, and life and death meeting.
