Summary

The Memoirs of an American Citizen by Robert Herrick is a story set in the early 1900s about a young man named E.V. Harrington from Indiana who ends up in Chicago. It's about wanting more in life and figuring out who you are as Harrington tries to make his way in a tough city. The book starts with Harrington struggling to survive on the streets, spending his first night homeless by the lake. He becomes friends with another drifter named Ed Hostetter, and they both look for work, but Harrington is wrongly accused of stealing. This part of the story shows him fighting against unfair opinions and working hard to find a job and earn respect. These first experiences show how Harrington will change and grow as he deals with the busy and chaotic life of the city.
