"A Chicago Princess" by Robert Barr is a story set in the early 1900s, and it trails Rupert Tremorne, who is an Englishman down on his luck. After losing all his money, Rupert ends up in Japan. He needs a job, he runs into the rich Mr. Silas K. Hemster and his delightful daughter. What starts as just finding a job soon turns into a story looking at social class, wanting more in life, and love that no one saw coming. At first, we see Rupert thinking about how bad his money problems are while he's staying in a small place in Nagasaki. He can barely get by and dreams of things getting better. Everything changes when he sees an American yacht owned by Mr. Hemster in the harbor, which leads them to meet. As Rupert tries to get a job with Mr. Hemster, he's pulled into a fancy world of money and status by Hemster’s daughter, making way for a relationship full of challenges to what's expected of them.
