"The Girl and the Bill" by Bannister Merwin is a story set in the energetic city of Chicago during the early 1900s, and tells of Robert Orme, a level-headed lawyer whose life is upended when he meets a puzzling girl in a black car. Romance and mystery mix together when Orme gets caught up in a complicated plot, prompted by a special five-dollar bill with secret directions, which pulls him into an exciting adventure. Initially, Robert Orme is introduced amongst the busy streets of Chicago, where he sees the girl struggling with a traffic ticket. Their brief interaction creates an interest in Orme, who gets a five-dollar bill having a strange message on it; he soon finds himself in an adventure, facing mysterious South Americans and two Japanese attackers. The girl shows up, showing just how important this bill is, and Orme learns that it could help her sick father recover important papers. Orme decides to help her and the girl with their goal, plunging him into a dangerous pursuit about loyalty, risk, and love itself.
