Summary

"The Beggar's Opera" by John Gay is a play that uses humor to point out the flaws of society. Set in the 1700s, the story follows Polly Peachum, her sneaky father Mr. Peachum, and the attractive criminal Captain Macheath and their complicated connections. The play starts with a Beggar and Players, who tell us this play will mock society. In the first act, Mr. Peachum and his helper Filch talk about their shady business with criminals. The play shows how normal-seeming people can be dishonest and criminals can be charming. We start to grasp Captain Macheath's bad reputation and hints about him and Polly, while her mother worries about her daughter's questionable choice in a husband. Overall, the beginning builds the play’s funny yet critical attitude, suggesting the troubles to follow.
