Summary

"The Younger Sister: A Novel, Vol. II" by Mrs. Hubback explores the lives of the Watson sisters in the 1800s, as they navigate society's expectations and fight their own insecurities. This story shows sisters Emma, Margaret, and Penelope, as they struggle with vanity and sibling rivalry in anticipation of a ball at Osborne Castle. The novel opens with Margaret worried about her appearance, while Penelope boldly tries to climb the social ladder and make a name for herself with the elite upper class, which causes her to be compared to the more reserved Emma. As the ball draws closer, Emma reflects on her feelings when a chance meeting with Sir William Gordon makes her question her relationships and how she views the world. The sisters are each faced with their vulnerabilities, and they all want to be seen as important as the story sets the stage for how the ball will affect their lives.
