Summary

"My Lord Duke" by E. W. Hornung is a tale from the late 1800s that follows Claude Lafont, a poet whose life takes a sharp turn when he becomes the Duke of St. Osmund's. He must suddenly grapple with familial expectations and his elevated position in society, all while dealing with his newly found Australian cousin, "Happy Jack," whose rugged nature clashes with Claude's refined world. The story begins with Claude learning about his inheritance and features the unexpected arrival of Jack, who has a fondness for cats, creating a humorous and complicated situation. Claude's peers react with a mix of sympathy and doubt, setting a lighthearted tone as he prepares to embrace his new identity. As Claude and Jack come to terms with their contrasting backgrounds and their shared family ties, the novel explores themes of identity, societal pressures, and personal development.

About the Author

Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
