Summary

"Dorothy Dale's School Rivals" by Margaret Penrose is a story about Dorothy Dale, a spirited girl, as she makes her way back to Glenwood School, where she will meet friends and face rivals, all while learning about friendship, competition, and growing up, which were important topics for young people back then. The excitement begins right away as Dorothy and her energetic friend Tavia are on a train heading back to school, but everything changes when the train stops because a bridge is broken. During this scary time, a kind young man, who they later learn is Mr. Armstrong, steps in to help an injured student. Tavia, known for her bold ideas, comes up with a daring plan to get off the train and walk to where they need to go, showing her adventurous side and the growing bonds between the girls. When the girls finally arrive at Glenwood, Dorothy finds herself in social situations where she will be tested, especially with a new rival named Jean Faval, which starts the drama and friendships that will form at school.
