Kitty Carstairs

"Kitty Carstairs" by J. J. Bell is a story about a young woman named Kitty, living in a boring village, who really wants to go on adventures and be free from her mean relatives. The book tells about how she struggles with what her family expects of her and her sad, one-sided feelings for Colin Hayward, who also feels trapped by his family's big plans for him. The story starts with Kitty seeing a train that goes to London, which makes her dream of leaving her village. Soon after, she talks to Colin, who is unhappy because he keeps failing to do what his family wants. Their talk shows that they both don't like their lives and that Kitty wants to get away from her aunt and uncle. The story shows Kitty's feelings as she deals with liking Colin, even though he might not like her back, and also with her relatives trying to make her marry Alec Symington, who she really doesn't like. How everyone feels about each other sets the scene for Kitty to try and find her own freedom and figure out who she really is.
