"The Parenticide Club" by Ambrose Bierce is a set of comically macabre short stories from the late 1800s that pokes fun at family life and what society thinks is normal, mainly by looking at murder and how ridiculous morals can be. With his funny and strange way of telling stories, Bierce looks at the dark reasons why families fight and how far people will go to get even or help themselves. There are four stories, each full of Bierce's dark sense of humor. "My Favorite Murder" is about a man telling the story of his funny and scary trial for killing his uncle, where everything is crazy and he tries to make his reasons for killing sound okay. The next tale, "Oil of Dog", describes a young man whose parents want more and more money, which leads to their deaths, and "An Imperfect Conflagration" is a funny story about trying to hide the killing of two people by setting the place on fire. The last story, "The Hypnotist," shows a silly and wild happening where a character uses hypnotism on his parents, which creates a ridiculously humorous situation. All these stories demonstrate Bierce's pessimistic outlook on people and how complicated family connections can be, mixing humor and horror in a special way.
