Summary

"The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce, Volume 09" by Ambrose Bierce is a collection of essays offering a window into the early 1900s through a critical lens. The author's sharp mind tackles everything from the strange habits of society to bigger problems like poverty, all with a strong dose of humor and skepticism. Kicking things off, Bierce talks about how "civilized" people are losing their sense of smell compared to those living in simpler societies, playfully arguing that this loss might be a sign of humanity going downhill. He uses stories and historical examples to show how civilization changes us, not just our bodies, but also how we interact with each other, pointing out the silliness he sees in modern life. This sets the tone for the rest of the book, where Bierce takes on important topics of his time with a mix of wit and cynicism.
