Summary

"Mr. Midshipman Easy" by Frederick Marryat is a story set in the early 1800s. It follows Mr. Easy, a man from Hampshire, who turns into a philosopher championing equality after years of marriage without kids, leading to funny situations at home. We meet Mr. and Mrs. Easy, living a simple life filled with mutual respect but also, strange habits. He shares his philosophical ponderings, and she does her own thing, without issue. Their lives change when Mrs. Easy gets pregnant after wanting children for years. Their son, Jack Easy, is a spoiled kid enjoying the advantages of youth, which guides him towards important life lessons and humorous adventures that explore ideas about how to raise kids and what's right and wrong.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
