Scouting with Kit Carson

"Scouting with Kit Carson" by Everett T. Tomlinson is a historical adventure about a young trapper named Reuben Benton, who travels to the Rocky Mountains and learns about survival in the wilderness. The story shows Reuben joining forces with Jean Badeau, forming a friendship as they encounter wildlife and the dangers of life in the wilderness. The book starts with a long ride from St. Louis to their campsite where a buffalo calf and wolves emerge, hinting at the harsh environment they will face. Reuben and Jean talk about potential Indian attacks. When a buffalo herd heads straight for their camp, Reuben chases after one, loses his horse, and gets separated from Jean; this starts a series of adventures for the pair filled with both excitement and danger.
