Summary

"The Long Lane's Turning" by Hallie Erminie Rives is a story set in the early 1900s that looks at themes of fairness, wanting to get ahead, and what happens because of the decisions people make with a courtroom case as the backdrop. The story is about Harry Sevier, a likable lawyer who has a tough choice to make when he defends a poor man known as “Paddy the Brick,” who is accused of stealing. As the story goes on, it shows Harry's problems with his own bad habits, especially his drinking problem, and how it affects his job and his life. The book starts with everyone in the courtroom waiting to see what will happen as Harry Sevier gets ready to defend his client, who is accused of theft. The mood is uneasy because Harry is well-educated, but his client has had a hard life. Even though Harry is known for winning cases, he worries that he will fail his client because of his addiction. The first part of the book paints a clear picture of Harry's inner struggles and how he affects others, especially Echo Allen, who likes him. As things happen, the reader gets caught up in a battle between doing what is right and what society expects.
