Summary

"The Aspern Papers" by Henry James is a 19th-century story about an unnamed man who goes to Venice hoping to get love letters from a famous dead poet, Jeffrey Aspern. These letters are in the hands of Aspern's old flame, Miss Juliana Bordereau, and her niece, Tita Bordereau, who live in an old, rundown mansion. The story kicks off with the man sharing his plan with his friend, Mrs. Prest, highlighting his big-time obsession with Aspern and his determination to unlock the secrets hidden within the papers. He thinks about how Miss Bordereau has avoided literary folks for years and how risky it is for him to try to befriend her as he gets ready to make contact with her. The reader discovers the romantic relationships of Aspern, which weaves together art, love, and the hunt for hidden truths in the past.
