Summary

"The Laughing Cavalier: The Story of the Ancestor of the Scarlet Pimpernel" by Emmuska Orczy is a historical fiction novel set in 17th-century Haarlem, where Gilda Beresteyn finds herself caught in a whirlwind of political turmoil and personal conflict. Amidst the unrest and the impending execution of the Barneveld family, Gilda's life takes a dramatic turn when Willem van Stoutenburg, a nobleman from her past, appears seeking sanctuary. Assisting him reignites their past romance but also puts Gilda at odds with her father's allegiance to the Stadtholder, thrusting her into a perilous game of loyalty, love, and political danger that threatens to unravel her world.

About the Author

Baroness Emma Orczy, usually known as Baroness Orczy or to her family and friends as Emmuska Orczy, was a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright. She is best known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel, the alter ego of Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English fop who turns into a quick-thinking escape artist in order to save French aristocrats from "Madame Guillotine" during the French Revolution, establishing the "hero with a secret identity" in popular culture.
