Summary

"The Three Cities Trilogy: Rome, Volume 4" by Émile Zola is a story set in the late 1800s that follows Pierre Froment, a young priest, as he journeys through the complicated religious world of Rome to protect the name of his book amidst political and religious plotting inside the Catholic Church. At the beginning of the volume, Pierre is trying to solve the issues brought forth from the Congregation of the Index, who have deemed his book unholy. He struggles with how to talk to important cardinals, taking advice from Don Vigilio, who warns him about the political issues at stake. As Pierre visits different members of the clergy, he slowly learns about the complex ambition and rivalry within the Church, especially the sneaky Jesuits. He begins to understand the stakes for not only his work but also the future of the Church, which leads him into a conflict that challenges his beliefs and goals, while the story shows the power struggles, setting the scene for Pierre's moral and spiritual problems.
