Summary

"The Three Cities Trilogy: Rome, Volume 3" by Émile Zola is a story set in Rome during the late 1800s that examines the complex relationship the characters have in regards to religion, the powerful and elite, and society’s rules within the Catholic Church. A young priest named Pierre is the main character, and he struggles with what he believes as he is a witness to a huge pilgrimage, revealing the contrast between religious beliefs and temporal power, especially with leaders like Pope Leo XIII featuring prominently. Early in the story, Pierre is around the Vatican, and he meets Monsignor Nani, who asks Pierre to be a witness to the Peter's Pence Fund reception, a global religious journey meant to strengthen the Church's influence. As the event continues, Pierre observes many people admiring of the pope, pushing him to struggle with his own internal conflict regarding worship. Surrounded by religious fervor and politics, he starts to understand the Church’s power in a worldly sense and how that power affects what he wishes to achieve as he seeks to revive Christianity, laying the foundation for his continual struggles.
