Summary

"A Volunteer with Pike" by Robert Ames Bennet is a historical fiction set in the early 1800s United States. The book tells the story of Dr. John Robinson, whose life takes an interesting turn when he must balance his yearning for adventure with his growing feelings for the stunning Señorita Alisanda Vallois. The story begins with Dr. Robinson's arrival in Washington, D.C., where he quickly meets Señorita Alisanda after coming across a bogged down Spanish coach. Their meeting sparks an attraction; however, it comes with obstacles due to her background, which is aristocratic, and the societal differences between them. The reader is quickly pulled into Robinson's world through funny yet suspenseful interactions with the coach's driver, mixed with the señorita who is both proud and charming. This mixing of love, adventure, and politics sets the scene for adventures that are yet to come.
