Summary

"The Collected Works of William Hazlitt, Vol. 03 (of 12)" by William Hazlitt, is a compilation of political writings from the early 1800s, where Hazlitt dissects politics and perceptions of freedom during his time. He analyzes the British political scene, championing personal freedoms while questioning authority. The book begins with "Free Thoughts on Public Affairs," a letter to a member of the Old Opposition, exploring what it means to truly love one's country. Hazlitt distinguishes real patriotism from the fake kind that supports unjust actions for selfish gain. He worries about the wars happening and the reasons given for them, urging people to think carefully and honestly about what the government does. Through this, Hazlitt builds a case for understanding political duty, appreciating freedom, and standing up against oppression, hoping to start a conversation about the nation's condition and its leaders.
