Summary

"The Collected Works of William Hazlitt, Vol. 09 (of 12)" by William Hazlitt is a compilation of insightful writings about art from the 1800s. The book focuses on different art collections in galleries around England, combining his observations from travels in France and Italy with other essays about art. Hazlitt’s work reveals his thoughtfulness about art, examining its impact, beauty, and the ideas it represents. He starts by taking the reader into the most important art galleries in England, beginning with Mr. Angerstein's collection. Hazlitt expresses how real art is much more interesting than copies, and explains that experiencing art can help people forget about their everyday troubles. He also talks about how great pieces of art touch people, help them imagine new things, and connect them to beauty that lasts forever.

About the Author

William Hazlitt was an English essayist, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator, and philosopher. He is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. He is also acknowledged as the finest art critic of his age. Despite his high standing among historians of literature and art, his work is currently little read and mostly out of print.
