Summary

"War-time Silhouettes" by Stephen Hudson is a series of stories that explore war's impact through individual lives, focusing on hardship, shifting societal norms, and humanity. The book introduces Mr. Adolf Reiss, a dissatisfied businessman struggling with war-related financial issues and societal challenges. The narrative begins with Mr. Reiss in his fancy room, pondering his issues, as a visit of his nephew in uniform changes his life. The young man requires funds to aid a comrade heading to war. Mr. Reiss expresses his bleak view founded on wealth and honor, but as things get complicated, involving his nephew's friend, Captain Staples, the story begins to explore sacrifice and loss, ending in an emotional letter. The beginning clearly contrasts money and moral decline, suggesting war's unavoidable impact.
