Summary

"The Leavenworth Case" by Anna Katharine Green is a late 19th-century crime novel exploring the perplexing murder of the wealthy Mr. Leavenworth. A young lawyer becomes involved in the mysterious circumstances surrounding the shooting in Mr. Leavenworth's library. He is drawn into investigating the lives of the two nieces, Mary and Eleanore Leavenworth, and the private secretary, James Harwell, all while the city detective, Mr. Gryce, leads. As the story unfolds, the absence of robbery points to a more personal motive, turning suspicion toward those closest to him, each possibly concealing secrets within the household's complex relationships.
