Summary

"Letters from England, Volume 1" by Robert Southey is a series of travel letters that gives readers a glimpse into the life and landscapes of early 19th-century England through the eyes of Don Manuel Alvarez Espriella, a made-up Spanish traveler. The book records the traveler's journey and his encounters, from his arrival in the busy port of Falmouth to his experiences with English food and customs, which he finds both interesting and strange compared to his home in Spain. Espriella's accounts offer a blend of admiration and criticism as he explores the unique aspects of English society, from the crowded customs house to the lively inns, revealing his thoughts on everything from the unusual food to the exciting and sometimes messy nature of travel in England at the time.

About the Author

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics such as Byron accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. He is remembered especially for the poem "After Blenheim" and the original version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
