Summary

"History of the United States of America, Volume 7 (of 9)" by Henry Adams is a deep explanation of James Madison's second term as President. It looks closely at what happened from 1813 to 1817, especially the War of 1812 and how it affected the United States' relationship with England. The story is about the important choices made during a time of war, focusing on battles, talks with other countries, and the way politics worked back then; at the start, we see President Madison dealing with problems after America declared war on England in 1812, and it shows how people like Madison and Monroe dealt with tough military losses and disagreements in politics. It discusses the mood of the public and the changing relationships between countries and, bit by bit, reveals how these events helped shape America.

About the Author

Henry Brooks Adams was an American historian and a member of the Adams political family, descended from two U.S. presidents. As a young Harvard graduate, he served as secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, Abraham Lincoln's ambassador to the United Kingdom. The posting influenced the younger man through the experience of wartime diplomacy, and absorption in English culture, especially the works of John Stuart Mill. After the American Civil War, he became a political journalist who entertained America's foremost intellectuals at his homes in Washington and Boston.
