Summary

"The Jucklins: A Novel" by Opie Percival Read is a story set in the late 1800s in the rural South, about a young man named Bill Hawes, nicknamed "Lazy Bill," who feels like an outsider because of his perceived clumsiness and laziness. The book starts with Bill thinking about his childhood, where he was often laughed at, and how he tried to trick some gypsies, but it ended badly and made things worse for him. Bill struggles with how others see him, but he dreams of being respected and wants to become a lawyer. The beginning of the novel suggests that Bill will have complicated relationships with those around him, especially a girl named Guinea, as he tries to figure out who he is and what he wants.
