Summary

"The Last of the Barons — Complete" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a historical fiction that transports readers to England during Edward IV's reign, where the mighty Earl of Warwick, the King-maker, dominates the political landscape. Through Warwick's experiences and his intricate bond with King Edward IV, the story explores how complicated power and faithfulness were, and how quick friends could become enemies during the Wars of the Roses. The story begins with a lively spring festival in 1467, showcasing the societal order, including archery competitions, and the beginning of conflict between the upper class and the rising middle class. We're introduced to Nicholas Alwyn, a commoner, and Marmaduke Nevile, an aristocrat, representing different viewpoints of that historical period. Sibyll Warner, a smart scholar’s daughter, also enters the scene, facing disapproval but showing great resolve. Through these people, the novel begins to show how personal goals, social change, and strong figures like Warwick come together to alter the course of history.
