Summary

"Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 4" by Havelock Ellis is a late 19th-century work examining the psychological side of how humans pick their partners. The text seeks to understand sexual attraction and choice by focusing on how the senses—touch, smell, hearing, and sight—play a part. Instead of giving final answers, the author makes clear that he wants to provide the groundwork for understanding how sensory experiences shape love itself. The book argues that old ideas about sexual selection have missed the mark by ignoring psychology, especially the important role of our senses. Ellis sets out to show how these sensory triggers form the basis of our understanding of human sexuality and how it has evolved over time, preparing readers for a exploration into these ideas.

About the Author

Henry Havelock Ellis was an English physician, eugenicist, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He co-wrote the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as on transgender psychology. He developed the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by psychoanalysis.
