"A Chance for Himself; or, Jack Hazard and His Treasure" by J. T. Trowbridge is a story from the late 1800s about a boy named Jack Hazard who finds a treasure hidden in a log and has to figure out what to do with it. The book starts on Peach Hill Farm, where Jack and Mr. Pipkin are moving rocks when a storm hits. Jack hides his clothes in a log before the rain comes down but finds coins with them, making him deal with questions about who owns the treasure. During his exciting journey, which includes his dog Lion and Squire Peternot, Jack has to balance his desire for wealth with doing what is right, while encountering themes of friendship, honesty, and figuring out who he really is.
