Summary

"Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries: Their Age and Uses" by James Fergusson is a historical exploration of megalithic structures around the world, that seeks to unravel the mysteries of their creation and function within ancient cultures. The book looks at the origins, purposes, and importance these monuments held for the societies that built them with the goal of giving a unified account of these structures. The author also discusses the issues of dating and interpreting these monuments, noting the problems with previous scholarship, which he feels relied too heavily on guesswork. Intended to set a course for a more rational understanding of megalithic monuments, the introduction contrasts the author's approach with past ideas from antiquarians.
