Summary

"Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, is a story set in the 1800s South that looks at slavery and right and wrong through the relationships between people of different classes. We meet Nina Gordon, a rich young woman who seems happy but also faces moral questions about slavery. At first, she seems caught up in her own world, thinking about social events and who she might marry, like the mysterious Edward Clayton. But as Nina talks with others, the story hints at the serious problems caused by slavery and what people in her position should do about it. This contrast between Nina's life and the issue of slavery is just the start of a story of complicated emotions and growing relationships.
