Summary

"A Lecture by Victoria Claflin Woodhull ...: The Review of a Century; or, The Fruit of Five Thousand Years" by Victoria Claflin Woodhull is a powerful speech delivered in the late 1800s, expressing progressive ideas and sharp criticisms of society. The lecture addresses the injustices faced by women, minorities, and workers, and it moves through the concepts of democracy, economic inequalities, and the need for significant social reform. The presentation highlights the historical progress of the United States, recalling the battles for independence and the principles of freedom and equality that fueled them. It scrutinizes how society has failed to uphold these principles, particularly when it comes to women and other marginalized groups. Woodhull advocates for a complete overhaul of the political system and societal norms so that all individuals are granted equal rights and opportunities. The speech is filled with historical context, philosophical ideas, and powerful calls for individual and collective action towards positive change, marking it as an important declaration for social transformation of the time.

About the Author

Victoria Claflin Woodhull, later Victoria Woodhull Martin, was an American leader of the women's suffrage movement who ran for president of the United States in the 1872 election. While many historians and authors agree that Woodhull was the first woman to run for the presidency, some disagree with classifying it as a true candidacy because according to the Constitution she would have been too young to be President if elected.
