Summary

"The Pacha of Many Tales" by Captain Frederick Marryat is a funny story set in the early 1800s about a clumsy ruler and his smart barber, reminiscent of "The Arabian Nights." The pacha, who isn't very bright and is worried about losing his position, decides he wants to hear stories from everyone he rules over, but his barber, Mustapha, uses this to his advantage. The story then reveals the struggles of power and how stories can be used to control people, all told in a fun and lighthearted way, as we are introduced to how storytelling can be a tool and a talent.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
